Standard 6 & 7: Engages With the Community Outside the Classroom
An important role of a teacher is to engage and communicate with the surrounding community. Throughout my teaching experience, I have always made sure to keep in contact with other teachers and parents/guardians, so I could promote students’ learning and encourage positive student behavior in the classroom. Additionally, being a part of the school community, a teacher is sometimes asked to take on responsibilities outside of the classroom. Students learn in different ways, and it takes working together to discover how to accommodate these particular needs of students.
Many of my students were involved with extracurricular activities, which helps support growth as a student in different ways, such as time and work management skills. One of my students was performing in a school play. The play required much of her time, so she began to struggle with the responsibilities as a student in our class. In aims to ensure her academic success, I was in contact with her parents via email, so we could work together in keeping the student on track. If I saw that the student was missing an assignment, I could inform her parents, so they could make sure their student would prioritize the time to complete the assignment.

During my internship, I was asked by the head of the special education department to help work with a particular student. This required me to participate in a conference that developed an IEP for the student. During the conference, I listened and took notes over the concerns and comments of the student’s parent, school psychologist, and head of the special education department. After taking notes, I was able to collect my thoughts and generate ideas that would help support the student’s special needs. I was able to give suggestions of computer apps and keyboard aids that matched issues, which the student faced.
