My name is Rob Black. I'm a teacher from Michigan State University. When I was growing up, my family moved all over the country. My family would move, on average, every four years. By switching from school to school, I was molded into who I am today: a people person. Since I love learning and I love people, I decided to become a teacher of English.
Teaching is more than having students learn information that they will spew out for a good grade. Students need to learn the processes of how to critically read, analyze, and write. Students are too often taught what effective reading, analyzing, and writing look like, but they are never taught how to do these processes for themselves. My philosophy in teaching is guiding students to reach higher levels of cognitive skills and not simply showing students how these higher levels of thinking are done.
